PadraigC Such a stunningly beautiful debut album, which I discovered by accident. It was a near-instant purchase after listening to the first track! Impossible to pick a favourite as they reveal more upon each listen! Amongst the gorgeous cello melodies and airs, there's a strong sense of presence, process & physicality which is intimate yet grounding. A very meditative and peaceful aural experience. Thank you! Favorite track: A4 holding space, c a r e.

ghosttropics What a special album to have stumbled upon. I've seen Abby's name a handful of times on various features and compilations, and am so pleased to see this new release. To me this is cut from a similar cloth as recent favourites from Theodore Cale Schafer, Other Joe, and J and the woolen stars, tapping into this beautifully subdued and entirely organic sound where strings, electronics, and the sounds of nature swim around each other like a half remembered dream in the middle of the woods.

about

AST157: Abby Sundborn - Amend c36

Amend, the first release by Naarm’s Abby Sundborn, belies a conceptually intuitive power and refinement not usual for an artist’s debut offering. Despite recorded material of her work being scarce, Sundborn has been active as an active participant, live fixture and DJ within Melbourne’s electronic underground for a couple of years now.

I was introduced to her work through a performance I witnessed at Abbotsford Convent early in 2022, hosted by sweet Melbourne lads, Outhouse. The sacred space only helped magnify the beautiful weightiness of Sundborn’s cello and electronics. These same instruments form the scaffolding of Amend, the bulk of which was recorded around the same period. And load-bearing these compositional tools are, carrying a heavy emotional burden on their shoulders across the album’s eight tracks. Best experienced as a complete work, ‘growth from dark’ presents one clear personal highlight in its maudlin cello soundtracking, like a cliff-top gaze into the immensity of the ocean. The creaking, wrought electronics and piano of ‘in nothing’ is another strong standalone moment.

While the tracks have a certain melancholy and darkness, they also carve out spaces for reflection on these extremes of feeling and, in doing so, provide a crucial distance. We can’t always perceive the light, the pure, without first knowing the darkness that it banishes.

"Healing can occur in relation to the above activities:
1) when individuals feel the common bond with others through a shared experience;
2) when one's inner experience is made manifest and accepted by others;
3) when one is aware of and in tune with one's surroundings; 4) when one's memories, or values, are integrated with the present moment and understood with others.

In this process, a kind of music occurs naturally. Its beauty is not through intention, but is intrinsic to the effectiveness of its healing power. This may be felt by the group, and the music relates to the people who make it through participation and sharing, as a stream or river whose waters offer refreshment and cleansing to those who find it."
